Riyadh Underground, Line 3 (1)

Riyadh Underground, Line 3

The package assigned is a key component of a large project involving the construction of an underground network consisting of 6 lines with a total length of approximately 180 km.

Line 3 is Riyadh’s longest metro network, spanning about 42 km long. It has 22 stations and connects the west (near the Jeddah Expressway) to the east (near the National Guard Camp of Khashm El Aam) city. The project also includes depots and parking lots. The aim is to improve transportation in the city by connecting the metro to other modes of transport like buses, trains, and the airport.

The rail line can accommodate trains with a maximum length of 36.7 meters, consisting of two carriages. In addition, the trains are designed to carry up to 267 passengers and have a maximum speed of 100 km/h.

The construction of a new metro system in the city is crucial for its future mobility, especially since its population is expected to increase rapidly in the coming years, with most being under 30 years old. The new transport system will help reduce traffic congestion, limit the number of vehicles on the streets, and lower pollution, creating a sustainable and efficient means of transportation.

Two stations are currently under construction, namely the Western Station and Downtown Station, and adhere to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standard as part of the project's guidelines. LEED is the certification standard for energy and sustainability used most extensively across the globe, a framework that assesses sustainable infrastructure, acknowledging the accomplishment of specific credits in various sustainability areas based on the fulfillment of specific requirements.

Downtown Station is a significant station located in the center of Riyadh, near the Governor's palace. It is recognized for its unique design. The station covers an area of 20,000 m² and serves two metro lines. Its entrance is covered by a large, unusual upside-down stainless steel cone.

Client: Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC).
